My first music post should be something classic. Jeff Buckley, Max Roach, Ornette Coleman, Arvo Part, Bach – anything but Type O Negative. But it’s not, it’s about the aforementioned goth metal band that I love so dearly. Instead of regurgitating biographical information, I’ll just forward you to the All Music Guide article about them .
I think I’m going to take a more High Fidelity approach. I’m starting to feel like I’m living the prequel to that movie. Anyways, I’m going to ramble on about a few personal reasons why I like this band and other potentially relevant content. Let’s see what happens!
Type O Negative! There’s nothing quite as satisfying as listening to “World Coming Down” (1999) after forgetting about it for a few months. I love that heavy ominous sound of doom! My favorite songs on this album are (in order):
- White Slavery
- Everyone I Love is Dead
- Everything Dies
I first heard about Type O Negative from my (then) boyfriend, Robert Hooker, when I was 14. I can clearly remember that over sized dirty old neon green on black shirt he had. I don’t remember listening to them around then though. I don’t know where I got a copy of “World Coming Down” – might have been a free promo I got working at Olsson’s Books & Records at the time. I eventually listened to it.
Now this wasn’t the listening, but the first memory I have of listening to it takes place in Richmond, VA. It must have been 2002 or 2003 and Justin and I had just driven about two hours from Northern VA to visit Joshie at his very first apartment. He had just started as a philosophy major at Virginia Commonwealth University and was living with Loyd (now Defenestrated Records!). We had just gotten off of the highway and were driving down Broad Street, I popped that sucker in and it it was perfect.
Isn’t it a great feeling when you’re on a road trip listening to something and think “This is exactly what should be playing right now. Everything is perfect.” I love road trips and driving and music.
Anyways, we drove around and looked for parking, got through a few songs, and from what I remember we had a pretty good time.
My LAST memory of listening to it takes place one July afternoon in Alexandria, VA. I was living in the town house with Stephanie and Joshie and it had been about six months since Justin and I split up and he moved out. I was packing up for the move to DC and I came across World Coming Down. I think it might have been over two years since I heard it. I cued up White Slavery and damn was it good! Stephanie was in agony and compared them to Creed (as if!) but the music went on.
Today I’m in Chicago and I got an urge to listen. Feels good. I found a video of White Slavery on You Tube so you can attempt to relate.
Enjoy!
