A Light Drizzle but a Warm 43°

By kendracalhoun

There’s a light drizzle today and as I was walking the mile and a half to the subway I started wondering if it was going to rain, then hoping it wasn’t going to rain.. really hoping it wasn’t going to rain. You see the thing is, I don’t have an umbrella. In DC I had 6 umbrellas, but I guess I left all of them there. Upon realizing this fact once again, Rihanna’s hit single “Umbrella” of course popped into my head.. “You can stand under my umbrella”

We’re not off to a good start on this music blog are we?

I LOVE THIS SONG! That deep synth line in the chorus really gets me and totally forgives all of the “eh eh ehing”, as in “You can stand under my umbrella eh eh eh eh eh eh eh”, which I think is stupid.

I have two fond memories associated with this song.

The first time I heard it was sometime in the spring of 2007. Josh borrowed his dad’s Jeep and was driving me to work because as usual, I was running late. He had a CD someone made for him and was like “Check this out”. The bass must have been all the way up and when we got to the chorus I felt that rush of “HOLY SHIT!” go through me where I have to squint and bow my head and raise my fist into the air and pound it on the roof. We listened to it on repeat til I got to work, and when he picked me up we listened to it all the way home.

The second memory I have of this song takes place on U Street in Washington, DC. It was sometime in the evening and I was walking home from somewhere. I felt like I was falling apart for some reason or another which isn’t something that happens frequently and doesn’t last very long but for some reason I was sad, hopeless and frustrated. I was texting Damian about it and he said to me, even though I know he HATES this song – yes, you know what I’m going to say – he said “You can stand under my umbrella”. That moved me.

This all sounds incredibly corny but what do you expect from someone who’s second favorite genre of film is Romantic Comedy (the first is music documentary)?

FINALLY I’m home after my first day of school and I just listened to this song after waiting patiently all day. I’m satisfied. Oooh, that brings me to my third post! But not until tomorrow. Have a wonderful evening.
